Anxiety, Stress and Panic Attacks
Anxiety can be debilitating and effect how we feel about ourselves, our relationships, our work and our social life. Some stress is necessary and fundamental to our survival and in reasonable levels can improve our performance, increase our energy levels and help us to achieve what we want achieve. However, as stress levels rise to an unreasonable level, we lose intellectual control and begin to suffer from anxiety.
Hypnotherapy can be very effective in dealing with anxiety. Hypnotherapy helps to reduce levels of stress and more importantly teaches you skills and tools to lower stress in your life. Through hypnotherapy you can learn to change your reactions to situations that cause you to feel anxious and to deal with situations differently. This allows you more control over your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, enabling you to feel more relaxed and confident in all situations, giving you clarity of mind, which leaves you free to focus on the positive aspects of your life.
Do you suffer from anxiety when you have to speak in a group, or give a presentation or speech?
Relaxation and reframing techniques, together with visual and mental rehearsal can be very effective in lowering anxiety and raising confidence. Combining these techniques, together with the encouragement and support of the therapist, can be very empowering, allowing you to feel confident and in control.
There are numerous phobias that we can suffer from, the most common being fear of public spaces and flying. The intense fear we feel means we spend a lot of time avoiding certain things or situations, and our world becomes smaller and smaller as we stop enjoying some of the things we used to.
Phobias usually develop as a result of a distressing or traumatic event, often in our childhood. Hypnotherapy can be extremely effective in helping people to overcome phobias through the use of relaxation to help lower levels of anxiety (if levels of general anxiety are high this will need to be addressed first). Hypnotic descensitisation , a safe and effective technique is then used which enables you to face your fears in your imagination whilst being relaxed. This process, together with The Rewind Technique, or Fast Phobia Technique, and a Reframe or visualisation of how you would like to experience the situation can enable you to regain control once again.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), who are responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health, advise GPs to refer patients suffering with Irritable Bowel Syndrome for psychological interventions (Hypnotherapy, CBT or Psychotherapy) if they have not responded to medication.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic condition which affects the digestive system. Symptoms of IBS include: abdominal pain or discomfort, changes in bowel habits, such as episodes of constipation or diarrhoea and abdominal bloating.
It is unknown exactly what causes IBS, however it is thought that stress is a major contributing factor.
Stress and anxiety, can trigger chemical changes that interfere with the normal workings of the digestive system. The Hypothalamus, situated in the Limbic system, controls the release of chemicals necessary for us to survive in difficult situations. This includes the potential to turn the contents of one’s stomach to liquid in seconds flat when faced with life a threatening situations. This is why many people who do not have a history of IBS still have a sudden change in bowel habits when faced with a stressful situation, such as an important exam or a job interview.
Therefore our stress levels, how we manage stress and our state of mind can have a huge impact on our physical well-being. These sessions teach self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques to help lower stress and other hypnotherapy techniques can help to manage symptoms of IBS. These techniques, together with some lifestyle changes can help to stop triggering the symptoms of IBS.
Hypnotherapy can also help to manage pain, promote positive thinking and coping strategies, all of which can help you to be back in control of your life again.
Confidence and Self-esteem
Hypnotherapy can help to lower your stress levels allowing you to be really aware of your inner strengths, resources and abilities. Solution-focused techniques focus you on what you want to achieve and how you would like your life to be, empowering you to change the way you think about yourself and your capabilities. This helps to build your confidence and strengthen your self-belief, which ultimately can improve the whole quality your of life!
When we are stressed or anxious we may have problems getting to sleep, our brains being “too busy” to relax or it may be that we wake during the night feeling uptight and then cannot easily get back to sleep. Often a vicious circle develops, fuelled by a new worry…..worry about not getting to sleep.
Hypnosis is often an effective treatment for those suffering from insomnia. Hypnotherapy can help an individual to relax, both mentally and physically and this can help to break this cycle, encouraging a more effective sleep pattern to be restored. Hypnotherapy can also help to gain insights for the reasons for the sleepless night, and solution focused techniques can be very effective empowering the client to address these situations, resulting in a better night’s rest.
Purpose, Direction & Achieving Goals
Sometimes we can steer away from what is really important due to outside pressures. Allowing precious time to discuss these issues in a safe, confidential place is so important. Hypnosis can help lower stress, which allows you to think clearer, plan easier and put small steps into action allowing you to achieve your goals. Visualisation is a powerful tool which can focus your mind on what you want to achieve. It is well known that sportsman or presenters use this technique, visualizing what they want to happen over and over again, in order to heighten success. Other techniques are also used to raise your confindence. Discussion, support and hypnosis can be a very helpful combination to help you achieve what you want to achieve and live your life in the way that is important to you!
Our lives can be so busy at times that we just keep going to the detriment of our body and mind as we put our well-being at the bottom of our list of things to do! These sessions allow you the space just for you and uses hypnosis which gently guides you into a deeply relaxed state.
Stress can be lowered and a sense of calm and control is restored to our lives with a feeling of being refreshed and revitalised. Relaxation is an essential part of survival and good health and with regular practice we can feel the benefits long after our relaxation sessions have finished.
